Shih-Tzu Aggressive Towards Visitors

Dear Cesar:

Our Shih-Tzu Diva is loving, playful, and my 6-year-old's best friend. The problem is, when friends or relatives come to the door, Diva goes bananas. She jumps up and down, lunges at the door, and won't stop barking. When the guests finally make it inside, she never bites them, but growls and watches them with her lip twitching. It has become so bad that we have to lock her in my daughter's bedroom every time someone comes over. When we do, she'll howl for a time, then just lay down, and get depressed.

What can we do to stop her from being aggressive towards strangers?

Deborah H.

Dear Deborah,

Diva believes she is the protector of your household. She may be protective of -- or possessive of -- your small daughter. This is natural behavior for a dog that is a pack leader; however, when dogs live with humans, the humans must always be the pack leaders. What I can't tell from your letter is how you reacted when Diva started her behavior. Chances are, you coddled her, talked soothingly to her, tried to let her know it was "OK." If Diva were human, that reaction might make sense. But Diva is a dog. By trying to soothe her tantrums, you are actually encouraging and nurturing that behavior.

What concerns me most about your letter is the growling and twitching you describe. This is a warning sign that could possibly lead to a bite. In this case, you must immediately find a qualified professional to work with you and make certain Diva's aggression doesn't get any more out of control. Ultimately, when company comes to the door, Diva should recognize that you are her pack leader, and that when you tell her to stop a behavior, she should stop it right away. It will take time and patience, but you must learn to take the leadership role in your own home before Diva will become the hospitable companion you desire.

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan

My shih tzu too!

I have always thought my shih tzu was a great dog. Compliant, sweet, and friendly. Until yesterday. we had our grandchildren over. Our two year old granddaughter was very huggie with both our dogs. However, our shih tzu bit her. Now, I am devastated.

Dog aggression towards other Family dog

I have 3 female dogs. Medium Mixed Breed 6 yrs Sheltie 5 yrs and a German Shepard 2 yrs old. For some reason after 2 yrs, now the German Shepard is attacking the Sheltie. She never shows aggression to the Mixed breed as they play together. The sheltie quit playing with the German Shepard when she became an adult because of her size. The sheltie will not go outside alone because as soon as she goes outside she is greeted with aggression from Layla. I never let them be alone outside anymore because of this problem. Yesterday the Sheltie was sleeping in the closet and Layla attacked her for no reason, except she likes to sleep there too. I have read every book or article on this aggression thing but I still need guidance and need to fix it myself as I can not afford a specialist. The German Shepard has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy and is on daily medication. I love them all equally, but Ruby is defenseless against Layla who is 4 times her size. Can anyone offer advice for me? Please.
Thank You
Kim

A 3 year Corgi who is trying to become the pack leader.

In April 08 I had a triple disectomy/fusion on my neck which did not take. During this time I became very weak. I have 4 dogs - a male 9 year old Corgi named Max, a male 8 year old schipperke named Sampson, a 7 1/2 year old female schipperke named Lexus and then Kramer the 3 year old Corgi with dominant agression issues. I have watched your show for a very long time and have always tried to put your rules into effect, however, my first surgery did not work and two weeks ago I had to go in for an additional anterior and posterior neck surgery. I am unable to put the dogs on the ground and I can not use a leash. Also it seems that ever since September when they pulled me off of work and discovered how bad my neck was, Kramer has continued to become more and more agressive. He is attacking his own pack for no reason. He is attacking to kill. For example Kramer was on the bed and my friend went to put Max the "old man" passive dag on the bed and Kramer went for Blood. The only thing that I can figure out is that is because I am week - he is trying to be strong and take my place. My husband is no help in acting as the pack leader especially when it comes to Kramer. When Kramer was 6 months old he broke his thigh bone and Gary blames himself so he lets Kramer do what ever he wants. Please help!
Thanks!
