I have the perfect dog with one exception – he is terrified to ride in a car. He is a Lab that was found in a friends yard, he was in bad shape bleeding starving, etc. My husband and I fell in love with him and now five months later after much love and care and many vet bills we have an amazing animal except for his car issues. He doesn't get sick he just shakes and pants and I'm afraid he's going to have a heart attack!! I would sure like some advice on how to help him get over this fear. Thank You.

Whenever a dog has a phobia or anxiety that creates a physical reaction, we need to know more about how you are reacting and responding to the behavior. My guess is that this is not a problem that is limited to the car but extends into other areas of his behavior as well, some that you may not even be aware of or recognize because they are so mild. The car is the place where he is exhibiting the highest level of intensity of the problem or fear. First, take into consideration how you may be nurturing this behavior. What is your tone of voice? How are you feeling? Are you giving affection? Are you projecting your own fears or anxiety on him?

Some steps to take:
• exercise will be your best friend. Drain your dog’s energy before putting him in the car
• Start with short rides, even around the block, and gradually build up to longer and longer car trips
• Be mindful of your own energy and emotion and forget the past. Visualize the outcome you want, rather that the previous experience
• Reward good, calm behavior and stop the practice before he has a chance to let the fear or anxiety set in
• Try the positive association technique with lavendar oil, as described here for air travel
• Put your dog in a position to succeed by taking these measures
