How Can I Get My Dogs to Stop Digging?

Hi Cesar,

My boyfriend and I have three dogs. Two are Rottweilers (three years old and one year old) and one is a Labrador retriever (nine months old). The problem we have is that they love to dig. We even tried burying their poop in their holes, so they would not dig anymore, but that did not stop them.

We are moving to a new house and want to break them of that habit. Is there something else we can do to stop the digging?

Please help!

Sincerely,

Cindy Kozma

Dear Cindy,

We know that digging can be harmful to people’s environments, but, at the same time, digging for some dogs is an activity that keeps them balanced. Digging is a form of exercise and distraction, and, for a dog, it can be simply a matter of being bored and having nothing else to do. It’s especially common if it’s in their breed to be diggers; when it’s part of their nature, they’ll often drain some of that extra energy by doing something that they are instinctually familiar with.

Human parents will bring their child to the playground and let them play in the sandbox, because digging is part of our nature as well.  Today, we don’t use that ability often, but deep in our genes, we still crave it. So we have a specific place we allow kids to dig. That can be one option for you – to make a specific place in your yard where your dogs are allowed to do their digging.  If that is still not acceptable to you, you need to find a way to drain the energy they release by digging.  Exercise is always the best way to drain any dog’s pent-up energy. Running with your dog, swimming with your dog, hiking with your dog – there are so many options.

So my question to you would be: do you know the energy levels of your dogs and are you challenging them enough physically so that they don’t feel the need to dig, bark, jump, or chew? Are they exercising, and for how long? If it isn’t long enough, then I would recommend intensifying that exercise. If you don’t have enough time, that’s when I would recommend putting backpacks on them, which can help by turning 30 minutes of actual exercise into an hour.

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan

Old world behavior - nosing food

I'll let the expert (Cesar) explain it better, and how to deal with it...but I have had many dogs who nose at their food bowls. I understand that this is a "wolf-like" behavior. The dog is instinctively covering his food (even though there's nothing to cover it with). He's pretending that there are leaves or dirt that he is nosing over his food to keep it safe. My 7-year old Bichon mix even places toys on top of his food, so that my other dog "won't see it". :-)
Same with digging on the carpet or couch. In the wild, they would be digging a nest or resting place.
Another example of this "feral" behavior is rolling on dead birds or other dead animals. In the past, this would cover their own scent, so hunting would be easier. The prey would smell the dead animal downwind...and not the hunter.

I won't pretend to know the cure to this behavior, but rest assured, your dog is exhibiting very common instincts...and isn't a "weirdo". :-)

Good Luck!

digging indoors?

My shar pei Winston likes to dig at the couches and the rugs in the house and even sometimes under the couches. Usually when he does this, he digs for a bit then stops with his head down and butt up and barks at the spot he is digging at, then proceeds to dig again. He's even started pulling his bed out of his crate and digging and barking at that! Here's a video I shot of him with his bed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyTr8af2sqI. The red couch you see is "his" couch and that's the one he tends to dig under. The larger couch is the one he digs and barks at. It's cute and all, but it would be nice to get him to do something else before he destroys the couches and the rugs!
Winston also has been stealing lots of things, including the kitchen throw rugs--one which is bigger than he is! He picks it up and carries it out of the kitchen and when we take it to put it back, he barks and follows us and then tries to take it again--last night he tried even while my mother was standing ON it!

My doxie does that! It seems

My doxie does that! It seems to be from stress. He jumps up on the couch and "digs." He also noses his food bowl on occasion and has broken several ceramic dog food bowls...since I started a feeding ritual with my three dogs he doesn't seem to have that problem. I'm not sure what the couch digging is about though.

My Thunder does that too!

OMG, I thought there was a rodent living in my sofa or something because I have never had a dog digg at a couch like he does lol. I had my hubby move the sofas and tipp them upside down to make sure ther was nothing living in there lol. Thunder is a great dane so you can imagine the site lol, he is only 6 months old but still huge. He has not been doing it as much lately, I wonder if some dogs just grow out of it.
