Dear Cesar,
I have an American Staffordshire named Coach who is almost 4 years old. We have an extreme problem with Coach barking through the fence at our surrounding neighbors and their dogs.
Then, when we go outside to get him or tell him to stop, he won't come to us and will take off running in the opposite direction. It is very frustrating. He does the same thing if we have company over and he is on the back patio. If he sees us inside with people, he starts barking and jumping up on the door. He also will jump all over people when he sees them. It can be exhausting. Is there something we can do to fix this? We must be doing something wrong. I would appreciate your help.

Dear Melissa,
First of all, I appreciate the last part of your question, when you admit that you think you're doing something wrong. It shows that you're willing to recognize and change your own behavior.
It's natural for dogs to bark to let others know 'this is my territory.' But it's a very particular way of barking. It isn't excessive. It won't annoy you. The kind of barking you are describing says to me that your dog is looking elsewhere for fulfillment. Barking through the fence is his way of fulfilling himself with excitement outside his house, because in his house, he is not getting what he's looking for. Why is the dog so excited? Well, he's probably lacking in exercise. And I'm not talking about backyard exercise; I'm talking about a nice, long walk. Why doesn't he come when you call? You're not fulfilling his needs - the neighbors outside with their dogs are! If you don't engage him physically and psychologically every day, his excitement will take over. His needs at that moment are coming from a predator point of view, not a follower point of view.
I can't see how you've been dealing with the problem, so I don't know if you're yelling, or if you're consistent in the rules, boundaries, and limitations, and I don't know if everybody in the household is consistent with the dog… there are many details I don't know. A lot of people say they watch the show all the time, but sometimes they're not seeing themselves in it. That's why it's very important to hire a professional who understands common sense and can work with you in person.
Staffordshire terriers have a lot of energy. It's important that you find somebody who can come and help you master the walk one on one. Then, once you're fulfilling the dog with the walk, you can move on to "sit," "stay," "relax," and other commands. And Melissa, I think you'll find that when you start really fulfilling your dog's needs, he will come automatically to you. It's the pack leader's law of gravity!
Stay calm and assertive,
Cesar Millan

Territorial neighbor dogs
I have the opposite problem. My new next door neighbors dogs are the aggressors and this has caused aggressive behaivor between my 2 labs. They even got into a fight with each other. After that I moved my privacy fence back 4 feet from the property line. It has not stopped the neighbors dogs from continually barking and charging their fence. This is more a question then comment. Does anyone know if there is any type of reliable product I could use along the property line that would deter the neighbors dogs from approaching the property line?
What if exercise is not enough?
My dachshund barks at anything/anyone when he is at the front yard. I walk him 1 hour per day (almost daily) and the behavior remains.
Is an e-collar the solution?
When exercise is not enough
What do you do when your dog barks? If your are simply yelling at him or bringing him in the house, this probably will not work. In fact, it may be reinforcing him to do it again because he is getting attention for it. Animals and people in general move toward pleasure and away from pain. Therefor, the quickest way to get an animal to learn is sometimes with positive reinforcement. Get a clicker or put a leash on the dog & when it starts barking tug the leash to the side. As soon as the dog is distracted and in the instant it quits barking, give a treat. Do this repeatedly until he learns it is good not to bark. If he goes out and does not bark, give lots of praise and/or treat. Also some dogs have more energy than others. Yours may need more than an hour walk to be satisfied. He may need you to teach him new tricks, set up a little obstacle course ect...
Hope this helps,
My dog barks at people passing....is this ok?
Dear Cesar,
Our dog is a fox terrior cross a little over 1 y.o. He is a fantastic dog and we don't have problems with him when he is walking outside our house. However, once he is in the back yard and the fence is closed he will go feral (back fur up and bark ferociously) whenever someone walks past. He will only do this while people pass by. The rest of the time he is quiet and happy.
It doesn't really bother us, though it is a little embarassing. Also, when he does it early in the morning we worry that it may be disturbing the neighbours.
Is this behaviour something we can 'fix', or is it just normal doggy behaviour and we shouldn't be concerned?
Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

WEIMARANER BARKING PROBLEM
Dear Cesar,
I have a 6 years olf female Weimaraner, i take her twice a day for long walks. She stays calm almost all walks but if someone looks at her too much, she starts barking too much, and i can´t stop her. Othertimes she is walking and suddenly smell someone she doesnt like and barks. Most of the time she barks to men, i think because when she was 6 months we were running, and a young man tried to kick her cos he was scared of her, since then she became a nervous dog. The same happens in my house if she dislike someone almost nothing can make her stop. I read Cesars book it helps me a lot, but i can´t stop her. I really need hel cos im moving to an appartment, and dont want to have problems with the neighbors. HELP US PLEASE!!!
Thank you.
Barking questions
Rules, Boundaries and limitations is a triad of theories not just words to explain. If you've watched most of Ceasar from 04 forward you'll notice it's the be all end all to give the triad in all things: no touch, no talk, no eye contact., etc. But the part I have the most difficulty with is when you are alone trying to apply these it can be very confusing. I think one thing left out of anyone who works with dogs, they are very very constitutionally patient. Oh yest they may be having a set of circumstantial behaviors as a result, but they are very patient.
What about dogs that belong to someone else. Someone who allows the dogs she boards, no they are not hers, they belong to her daughters, who bark through the night. I tried giving her 2nd hand information. I tried citing her the web site, telling her of the program, showing her my books, loaning my CD's that came back damaged by her chewing dog, and she will not change. Recently they have become large as a Great Dane. And she as decided to let them run on our private road. No one likes an enemy as a neighbor. So everyone is just dealing with it in their own way.
What to do about that one Ceasar.
Barking Schnauzer
Dear Cesar,
I have a 2 year old miniature schnauzer named Otto, i have to admit he's my baby and i treat him more like a kid than a dog. He's a very good dog, but there is one thing i can't make him stop doing.
When someone comes home, the bell rings and hell comes right up to my apartment. He starts barking and won't stop for about 3 minutes, if it's me or my parents (the 3 persons he lives with) he starts jumping and whining in a very loud and penetrating way. I've tried lots of things and i can't make him stop, i must be doing something wrong. I've tried standing still and don't even look at him until he stops and then give him a cookie, i've tried ignoring him until he quits, but nothing works.
Cesar, i know you're a miracle worker so please: help! i love my dog, but i hate when he does this and some people, like my father, kick him to make him stop and i can't stand that!

barking schnauzer
I too have the dreaded barking schnauzer syndrome! When I let them out, I know there will be excessive barking and no way for me to get them under control. Makes me crazy because they are such great dogs. My father says that they're dogs, let them bark, but I find it out of control. I wish I could figure it out, but since my childhood schnauzer I've never been able to quiet one!
Barking Schnauzer
I have almost the same problem. I have a little 8 lb toy schnauzer who is a very well behaved dog except that she barks ridiculously when the doorbell rings, when people come in, at ANYTHING outside or in the car, and even at doorbells on tv!! I have tried bark collars - all it does it make her growl and bark lower!! She shakes when she wears it because she doesn't like it, and as soon as i take it off, she goes back to barking!
I have tried a lot of Cesar's methods but i just CANNOT stop Zoe from barking!!! I need HELP!!!
Solving a Barking Problem
Cesar is right on when he tells a previous reader that exercise is a key component in solving a barking problem. Often the dog has much more energy than s/he gets to exert during the day and barking is a great way to get rid of a lot of that energy. It's also self-reinforcing; the more the dog barks, the more excited s/he gets -- AND often, the more attention s/he gets from his/her owner!
If your dog got 2-3 hours of full-out off-leash top speed running every day it would not be too much. How much can you provide her?
After you've started exercising this dog, read all the long and short term strategies available to you at http://www.dogdaysusa.com/barking.html and do the exercises there too. Barking CAN be dramatically reduced and even stopped. But it will take some effort on your part.
