"Leader of the Pack" Episode 8: Mambo Madness
Mambo, a seven year-old neutered Jack Russell terrier mix, was originally found on the streets as a stray. He lived with — and was treated like a king by — an older couple for a few years, until he showed aggression toward their grandchildren. Now Mambo is an old, homeless mutt with a really spoiled attitude.
Mambo is currently at the Enschede Shelter in Holland, where one of the caretakers, Rudd, is very concerned about his future. Mambo’s attitude is keeping him from being adopted. He’s stressed out and has become destructive, and is very unpopular with the other dogs. A few have tried to attack him and most others deliberately avoid him.
Cesar begins by testing Mambo’s poor social skills by putting him in with the pack. Mambo is pushy with the other dogs, especially females, and it’s soon clear to Cesar that Mambo is going to need a leader to give him the exercise and discipline he has so clearly lacked.
The first candidates are Marlon and Wendy, from Holland. Wendy has wanted a dog for years while Marlon is terrified of them. She’s finally convinced him it’s time to adopt, though, so they’ve come to Miraflores. Wendy seems to be a natural, but will Marlon be able to manage Mambo’s dominant, aggressive energy?
Next up are Henk, Sylvia, and their three teenage daughters, Sam, Joannie, and Donna. Their biggest concern is whether a new dog will get along with their fourteen year old cat. Mambo would need strong rules, boundaries, and limitations in order to join their pack, especially after his energy and attitude on the leash with Sylvia triggers a fight with another dog.
Dana and Gina, the third couple, have never had a dog together, but they do have two cats at home. They are dog savvy, but will Gina’s energy prove too soft for a Jack Russell with a bad attitude?
Before Cesar can decide, it’s time for some obedience training with this very disobedient dog. Tune in to see which couple will become Mambo’s new “Leader of the Pack.”
