Dog Approved People Food

We try to keep our dogs on their canine diets but sometimes we just can’t resist slipping them an occasional human morsel. If you’d like to reward your pet with a table scrap, make sure that you choose people foods that are safe for canine tummies.

Puppy Feeding Guidelines

Hello. I am rescuing my first puppy next Monday. She'll be 11.5 weeks when we get her, and I've never had a dog that young. The people fostering her are feeding her litter 3/4c twice a day. She's an Australian shepherd/great pyrenees/golden retriever mix. I keep reading mixed things about feeding them twice or three times a day. Which do you recommend? And if it is 3 times a day, given that she's almost 3 months old, how much would you feed her each time? Read more

Ask the Vet: Speed Eater

We have had issues with our 7-month old puppy, Philly, and her eating...she always seems nervous when she eats -- tail tucked between her legs and she will consume her food very rapidly. She often eats her breakfast and within 10 minutes will throw it all up. We have taken her to our vet to find out there is nothing wrong as far as they can see. What do we do? Read more

Switching to Adult Food from Puppy Food

I am reading conflicting information about when to transfer our puppy from puppy food to adult dog food. Our vet says anytime between 6 and 18 months for our type of dog (Basset hound). The dog food guide says 12 months, the 30-year pet store owner says 6 months, and our back-up vet says 12 months at the longest. Read more

Ask the Vet: Rock-eating “Pica” Pup

We have a 7-week-old Rottie/Dobie mix puppy. He was gotten from a rescue organization. He came to us with ticks, terrible diarrhea and a terrible behavior: compulsive rock eating. In his last stool, I counted 45 rocks. We try to keep him confined to our grassy area when he's outside, but he still manages to find rocks. I "googled" this behavior and it was suggested that he might have a vitamin deficiency. We have him on a multiple vitamin with iron. Any other suggestions? Read more

Overweight Dog

My Cheena (a Chihuahua/pekinese) is overweight at 11 lb. I have had numerous suggestions on how to get her to lose about 3 or 4 lb. Can you give me some advice on how to take some weight off her? Read more
