Change in Dog Skin Pigmentation

I have four Yorkies, the oldest, who is 5 yrs. old, and female, has suddenly and without explanation developed dark pigmentation on her under belly region and it has gradually spread. There are no other signs or symptoms, no scratching, itching, scaling or flaking skin. Just this dark bluish discoloration. Her vet was unable to definitively diagnose the condition, just gave me a long list of what it could be: fungus, hormones (she is spayed), thyroid, stress.
