Fast Friends

On the track, they’re a blur of impossible speed and grace. At your side, they become gentle companions, content to go for a long walk or a romp in the park. Some of the greyhounds on these pages—all put up for adoption by Hemopet of Garden Grove, California—have found new homes, while others are still looking.

RUFFIAN
Three-year-old male
Don’t be fooled by the open jaws; this happy bouncing boy is a hugger, not a fighter—and there’s nothing he loves more than his toys!

ONIEDA
Two-year-old male
He’s a shy, unassuming boy who was born to run—right into the heart of a loving household.

LADDIE
Five-year-old male
What’s he thinking? “Take me home! Take me home!” He loves people, and he shows it by showering them daily with hugs and kisses.

SPY
Five-year-old male
Those eyes! Those gams! This playful, happy snuggle bunny is ready to retire, and he’s looking for someone to share all he has to offer.

SWAT & CHEEZIT
They’re no longer Swat and Cheezit; now they’re Bentley and Hemi. Why the name change? They were both adopted by a family in San Clemente, California!

SULTAN & TEA TIME
A couple in Woodland Hills, California, made the leap and adopted both this easy-going guy and this very busy girl.

DONKEY KONG
He’s playful, bouncy, and outgoing—and he’s named for one of the most popular video games of all time. Really, what more could a dog owner ask for?

FERDIE
Adopted by a family in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, he now spends his days with another dog—who’s a mutt—plus two kids and a cat.

HOUND HAVEN
An animal blood bank does double duty.
Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jean Dodds, Hemopet is best known as a nonprofit animal blood bank that provides blood products to veterinary clinics around the country. But Hemopet also runs a renowned greyhound rescue program that has placed more than 1,500 of the fleet-footed beauties—most of them racing industry castoffs—in new homes.
