Abuse is never acceptable.
Showing an animal strong leadership and giving it rules is not the same thing as instilling fear and punishing it. A quick, assertive touch is not the same as a strike.
Never strike a dog. Never let an animal push your buttons. Never, ever correct an animal out of anger or frustration. When you try to correct your dog out of anger, you are usually more out of control than your dog is. You are fulfilling your own needs, not the animalās. The dog will sense your unstable energy and often escalate the unwanted behavior.
You are there to teach and show leadership. If youāre going to correct your dog, always remain in your calm-assertive state of mind. For some, this may be a challenge, but perhaps that is why this animal is in your life, so that both of you can learn a healthier way of behaving.

"My kids are around pit bulls every day. In the '70s they blamed Dobermans, in the '80s they blamed German shepherds, in the '90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull." - Cesar Millan
Pit bulls get a bad rap because of irresponsible owners. Many people consider the look or popularity of a breed before thinking about whether the dog works for their lifestyle. Please evaluate your lifestyle before taking on the responsibility of a pit bull.
Celebrities who Own Pit Bulls
- Jon Stewart of The Daily Show owns two pit bulls: Shamsky & Monkey.
- Helen Keller had a pit bull as a family pet.
- Ken Howard, award-winning actor from Crossing Jordon, was saved by his pit bull Shadow during a medical crisis.

Common Foods That Can Be Toxic To Our Pets
We all love our pets. For many of us, one way we show that love is through special treats such as human food. As long as we donāt overindulge our loved ones into obesity, these little treats can be fun for both pet and parent. However, it is important to realize that dogs and cats are very different from humans in some very important ways, which can result in tragedies for the uninformed parent.

Calvin & Coco
When little Chihuahua Coco came to Cesar, he was ready to take on anybody. The Chihuahua was aggressive towards humans and dogs of all sizes. Cesar has said that the four-pound dog was one of his toughest cases.
Often people regard bad behavior from smaller dogs, such as Chihuahuas, as cute. Without meaning to, owners often encourage bad behavior, and donāt provide them with the rules, boundaries and limitations they need. This behavior often escalates into serious behavioral issues.
Coco was just such a dog. His frustrated owner brought him to Cesar for rehabilitation. While Cesar rehabilitated the small dog, the entire Millan family got to know him, and his youngest son Calvin really took to him.
When his owner came to pick him up, young Calvin's pleading eyes and childhood innocence led her to offer Coco to the Millan family. Of course, they accepted, and now Coco is an important part of the family!

Excerpt from Cesarās Way (P. 237 ö 239)
When you bring a dog from a breeder or a shelter into your new home, remember that to that dog, you are simply transporting him from one kennel to another. You may have a six-million-dollar, fifty-acre, fourteen-bathroom kennel with a pool, hot tub, guesthouse and tennis court, but to the dog, itās just a bigger kennel. Walls are not natural to animals, period ö no matter what famous architect designed them. Therefore, you need to create the experience of migration for your dog before you reach your home is go for a long, long walk with your dog ö at least an hour walk ö through his new neighborhood. Take as long a walk as you can possibly afford, then add in an extra twenty minutes on top of that. During this walk, you are both building a bond of trust with your new companion and establishing your position as pack leader. The rules of your entire relationship are being established in those first important moments. Your dog is getting the feeling of his new neighborhood. You are creating for him what it might feel like to migrate to a new home with his pack leader. And, of course, you are tiring him out so heāll be more amenable to conditioning once you enter the house.

Read next month to hear about more about holiday promo info, fun facts, tips from Cesar and perhaps the most famous of Cesarās pack, pit bull Daddy! In the meantime, hereās our featured success story from Rory Claire of Pebble Beach, CA:
Hello Cesar,
I love Rottweilers, and Dobermans, too, and have rescued them over the years. We recently lost our 11 1/2 year-old Rottie, Nala. She was a wonderful dog. Our 5 year old female Doby, Kiara, is such a great dog. We taught her to swim, and she loves going on our boat and jet-skis, although she only goes without her bright yellow life vest when we are close to shore. I have attached some photos for your enjoyment.
I realized, after watching one of your programs, that I had not properly handled our Doby's first meeting with our cat years ago. The Doby has chased the cat ever since. I rescued our Doby when she was 4 months old and just figured that she was a cat chaser. Since I first began watching your show a few months ago, I have been reminding myself, and my husband and 16 year old daughter, that we are the pack leaders. Today, my daughter and I brought our Doby and cat together in the way I watched on your show, and viola, it was great! Our cat loves dogs and snuggled up with our Rottweiler all the time. I think he has really missed being with a dog. We will continue working on calm-submission with our Doby, and we are looking forward to the day when we may be able to see our Doby and cat laying side-by-side in the grass of our back yard like the cat and Rottie used to do.
All our family dogs have been Rottweiler and Doberman rescues the past 25 years. I just love the big personalities and temperament and love seeing you with your beautiful Rotties, pit bulls and other great dogs. Thanks for saving all of them and giving them such a great home. I will continue watching your show and continue working on being a great pack leader.
Was Rory Claire able to rehabilitate Kiara into a cat-friendly Doberman?
