Greetings,

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog month! I encourage you to participate in this special event. If you're not ready to adopt a dog, that's okay! Keep it on your "to do" list for the future. There are still many other ways you can help. Fostering a dog is a great way to assist dogs in need - and a chance to see if you are ready for full-time dog care. You can also donate time or money to support the work of rescues and shelters in your area. If you have a friend or neighbor with a happy-go-lucky dog, take that dog out for a nice, long walk in honor of the dogs in need. Lastly, you can keep the shelter dogs in your thoughts and prayers.

If you are considering adopting a dog this month, I recommend that you really evaluate your lifestyle. Are you ready to make a commitment to this dog for the rest of its lifetime? Be aware that many shelter dogs come with issues. You have to be prepared - both financially and psychologically - to deal with these issues. Learn as much as you can about dog behavior and care before you adopt. Cesar Millan, Inc. offers the Your New Dog: First Day and Beyond DVD, which specifically covers selecting the right dog from a shelter, but this is just one of many resources available to you. The more informed you are before making the adoption, the better! All these topics are covered in my new book, A Member of the Family, which you can learn about in this issue...

If you decide that you are ready to provide a 24/7 commitment to pack leadership for the next ten to twenty years, choose your new companion wisely! Take your time. This isn't a race. If you don't find the right dog this month, that's okay! You are still doing your part even if the adoption takes place after this month's celebration. Wait until you find an animal that matches your energy level and lifestyle. Remember, don't go into the shelter ready to adopt the cutest dog or the one with the saddest story - each of these animals deserves a home, so find the one that is best suited for your family.

However you choose to help this month, I applaud your efforts and assure you that canines across the country appreciate your charity!

Sneak Peek: October Episodes

On October 10th at 8pm EST, Cesar returns in the premiere of his long-awaited 5th season! French Bulldog Bozley has had rules, boundaries, and limitations from day one, but that hasn't stopped him from developing a tenacious form of dog aggression! Owners Nidia & Sean Tatalovich have called in Cesar to give this Frenchie a lesson in hospitality. Next up, not even careful research could prepare Regina and Steve Risseeuw for their terrified Vizsla. Can Cesar help this dog on the run?

On October 17th, Chihuahua Amalie is ruling the Mehegan household with a tiny iron paw. She terrorizes Mastiff Harley and snaps at the Mehegan's infant son. Can Cesar correct this imbalance of power? Also in this episode, Bam Bam the red-nosed pit bull is totally out of control - jumping, mouthing, and harassing guests. Can Cesar provide Raul Valaquez with some preventative pit tips?

On October 24th, Argonaut the English Bulldog/Lab mix is showing serious signs of aggression towards the family. Cesar voyages to San Bruno, California to give this Greek tragedy a happy ending. Later, can Cesar cure Patches the Cocker Spaniel of her paper-eating obsession?

Finally, on October 31st, Casanova is a Lab mix with no love for other dogs... but only when he's leashed! Cesar's task: to bring out Casanova's natural dog-loving instincts. Then, the Browns needs help keeping their Jack Russell Sooner from starting bloody fights with his playmate Trace. Can Cesar keep Sooner from starting a fight he won't be able to finish?

Don't miss your chance to meet with the Producers of Dog Whisperer to audition to be on the show! Be prepared to describe your dog's problem behavior. Dogs are welcome, but your dog does not need to attend to be considered. A video of your dog's behavior must be submitted to be chosen for the show. Ask Cesar: Challenging Puppy

We adopted Cassie, a 10 month-old Shar Pei/Pointer-mix, from a local shelter three months ago. She had a sweet temperament and was always excited. We figured "she's still a puppy." She was mouthing and jumping up a lot and needed lots of training, but she seemed to bond to me very quickly. We signed up for training class and continued with regular exercise. Mainly I walked her, but to drain energy more quickly, I took her to the dog park to play fetch. The first couple of times she was fine...

Ask The Vet: How Often To Bathe A Dog

Simple question: how often do you bathe a dog?

The simple answer to this question is: how often do you want to bathe your dog? Unless a dog has skin problems, there is no specific need to bathe them except to make him a more enjoyable companion. Just like people, some dogs get stinky faster than others. I have known dogs that have never had a bath in their life and do not have an unpleasant smell, but my own dogs get bathed weekly...
