Cesar Shares Memories from the Early Days at the DPC
January 2009 Issue 1
Cesar Millan Happy New Year!

As this year ends and another begins, I find myself reflecting on the start of my journey here in the United States: the early days at the Dog Psychology Center. It all started because of my passion for dogs. Dogs have done more for me than I can ever do for them. As I always say, dogs can be your students and your teachers. They have shown me the value of living in the moment and of maintaining calm. They have taught me how to be a better father, a better husband, and a more balanced human being.

When I first opened the DPC, I had more time for my pack. I was with them from 5 in the morning to 11 at night every single day. As a result, I had less time for my human family. Back then, it was my wife who kept the fort together while I was gaining the momentum that led me where I am now. Without her, I would not have been able to accomplish what I have. Today, I spend more time with my human pack than my canine pack, but the dogs don't hold it against me. (Plus I still have a pack of ten dogs at the house, so I am rarely without canine company!)

Much has changed since I began - I certainly live a more comfortable life now than I did in the days when I charged $10 to work with a dog - but just as much has remained the same. I set out with a goal to improve the lives of dogs, and today I continue to dream big and work hard at increasing my reach and expanding my knowledge. One day I hope to live in a world where every dog has a home and an owner who understands him.

So in the January newsletters, I will share with you some of my fond memories from when the Dog Psychology Center began.

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan
Sneak Peek: January Episodes
This month's Dog Whisperer premieres begin on January 2nd at 8pm EST as Cesar swoops in to help socialize 150-lb. Great Dane Bacchus, and then tightens the belt for Lhasa Apso Jody who eats everything in sight!

Then on January 9th at 8pm EST, Cesar takes on surly Chihuahua mix Stanley, calms problematic Pomeranian Shoven, and investigates the cause behind Australian Shepherd/Sharpei mix Leo's strange reaction to his owner's coughing fits!

On January 16th at 8pm EST, the wags continue as Cesar pays a house call to tame Hyde & Vada, a pair of aggressive wolf hybrids, and then moves on to Nacho, a Chihuahua with an extra spicy bite!

January 23rd at 8pm EST pits Cesar against Calder the anxiety-ridden Cattle dog/Blue Heeler mix, followed by Sadie, a fat and fearful Bassett Hound with an inconsistent exercise routine.

Then, finally, the main event! On January 30th at 8pm EST, Dog Whisperer remembers some of Cesar's toughest tiny cases, and adds one more - a nasty Chihuahua called El Diablo! Can Cesar best this devil dog that has sent even the toughest pit bulls at the shelter running for cover?

When the DPC Opened...
When my wife and I opened up the Dog Psychology Center, it was located in a very bad neighborhood in South Central LA. There was graffiti all over the place. There were drug users hanging around. Believe it or not, my neighbors credit me with cleaning it up!

People were intimidated by a guy walking around with so many big dogs off-leash - Rottweilers and pit bulls. I didn't set out to do that, but it was good for my business too. People want to feel safe about the place they leave their dogs, and when we first moved in, the area did not inspire confidence.

Calvin and Andre: Pack Leaders from the Beginning!
To celebrate this season of nostalgia, we sat down with Cesar to ask him about two of his most important human pack members and how they've helped him to work with his pack at the Dog Psychology Center.

Q: How did your sons Andre and Calvin help when they were younger?

Actually, Calvin and Andre helped even more then than they do now! Their presence alone was teaching my pack how to be with a young human being. Up until they were 6 years old, they came with me to the Dog Psychology Center, and almost every day they went with me up into the mountains. That's all I could give them. It was the only Disney I could afford.
