Enjoy Springtime with Your Dog! - Cesar Millan
March 2009 Issue 2
Cesar Millan Greetings,

In nature, dogs prefer to be outside. Sure, they have dens, but that's just so they can stay safe in bad weather. When it's clear out, you'll find them outside enjoying the sun, the shade, and the fresh air.

Dogs were not born to live behind walls. This is something we should honor every day if we can. During the winter months, this can become hard, but as spring begins, its time to renew your commitment to the daily walk! The walk is more than a bathroom break. It's about honoring the needs of another being. To me, this is key: I honor the animal, and that's why they honor me back.

I don't approach a dog thinking, "I'm here to train you." No, I'm there to fulfill the animal. I am there to find out what the animal needs. As you see on Dog Whisperer, my strategies vary, but no matter what the situation, it's about honoring who they are and how they are programmed to live their lives.

Animals don't care about fame, financial status, or a diploma. They care about living a balanced life. They don't need us to accomplish that - but we can stand in the way of that. So if you bring an animal into your life, consider this: are you honoring your animal's needs? Are you fulfilling the commitment you made when you adopted your dog?

A walk is not just about putting one foot in front of the other. It's about bonding with your canine. Honor your dog's needs today!

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan

Ask Cesar: Excessive Barking
I have an American Staffordshire named Coach who is almost 4 years old. We have an extreme problem with Coach barking through the fence at our neighbors and their dogs. Then, when we go outside to get him or tell him to stop, he won't come to us and will take off running in the opposite direction. It is very frustrating. He does the same thing if we have company over and he is on the back patio. If he sees us inside with people, he starts barking and jumping up on the door. He also will jump all over people when he sees them. It can be exhausting. Is there something we can do to fix this? We must be doing something wrong. I would appreciate your help.

Pack Profile: Rockstar
For Those Who Are About To Bark...

From games of fetch in the backyard, to swimming in the reservoirs and romping in the foothills of the Angeles National Forest, Dog Whisperer field producer Todd has his hands full dealing with his athletic and rowdy new pack.

At just 2 years old and quick as a whip, pit bull/pointer mix Rockstar gives even his bullying adopted brother Curly a run for his money when it comes to sheer velocity! But it isn't all life in the fast lane with Rockstar and his foster siblings. With a new baby in the house, Rockstar is putting his inner-cuddler to work and showing everyone the soft, fuzzy underbelly of rock 'n roll.

Celebrating Irish Dog Breeds
Slainte! St. Patrick's Day is a raucous celebration of Irish heritage - its citizenry, patriotism, and culture - recognized by nations around the world, from Canada and New Zealand to the US and Ireland, itself. But with a focus on good food, good company, and a healthy dose of liquid refreshment, Ireland's canine contribution is often overlooked! This month, the Cesar Millan, Inc. newsletter is sitting up and taking notice of these forgotten fidos.

Hero of the Month & Next Newsletter
When the Cesar Millan, Inc. staff received a submission for a Success Story from Tammy Hartwig, we knew that wasn't the right place for this passionate volunteer's hard work.

The story of Butch's transformation from fearful shelter dog to confident service dog is just one chapter of Tammy's legacy at the Washburn County Area Humane Society. In what many know as "Mamma T's Doghouse," countless animals have overcome medical and behavioral hardships and received a second chance in a loving home. Cesar Millan is proud to honor Tammy as March's Hero of the Month!
