Dog Whisperer Special: Inside Puppy Mills
May 2009 Issue 1
Cesar Millan Greetings,

Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a rescue from a puppy mill with the dedicated staff of Last Chance for Animals, which you will see on an episode of Dog Whisperer. In my career, I have dealt with many, many troubled dogs that come from puppy mills, but this was the first time I had witnessed the conditions firsthand. These courageous men and women had a lot of experience with the physical rescue of these animals, but I was there to help them start the psychological rescue from the moment they took the dogs out of the cramped quarters.

After seeing the inhumane conditions and feeling the anxious, frustrated energy of the dogs, many people immediately feel sorry and express that through affection and soft energy. While this is a normal human reaction, it is not what is best for the dogs. Instead of helping, they are actually nurturing the dogs' insecurities.

When adopting any dog who may have a difficult past, you need to let go of your pity and guilt before bringing the dog home. Instead, make the dog feel secure by providing the calm and balanced energy of a pack leader. This way, the dog can relax, knowing that you have things under control.

Many of the dogs at puppy mills have rarely, if ever, seen the outside of their cages. Those cramped quarters were their entire world, so it is important to allow them to explore the new surroundings on their own. In order to begin healthy development, provide the dog with a secure environment and the guidance of a knowledgeable, calm, and quiet human pack leader.

If you find yourself dwelling on the dog’s sad past, think about the wonderful future you are giving your new canine companion. By adopting this dog, you are doing a noble thing and providing him or her with a loving family. Focus on the positive!

Stay calm and assertive,

Cesar Millan

Sneak Peek: A Very Special Episode of Dog Whisperer
This month, National Geographic Channel is proud to premiere a very special episode of Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. On Friday, May 8 at 9 pm ET/PT, what begins as a routine rehabilitation for volunteer Kim Sill's five year-old Pekingese and six year-old Yorkshire Terrier puppy mill rescues will become a special assignment with a much broader aim. Once Kim has the information she needs to treat Sophie and Lovey's respective people aggression and obsessive licking, we'll join Cesar on a ride-along with the organization she works for, Last Chance for Animals - a national non-profit dedicated to eliminating animal exploitation through education, investigation, and legislation - on a mission to rescue a pack of dogs from a local suspected puppy mill. By observing the entire rescue process, Cesar hopes to provide LCA with the necessary canine know-how to work with puppy mill rescue dogs from the moment they're picked up, and help to spread awareness about the practices of non-compliant kennels. Cesar also hopes to bring awareness to the general public about the heart-rending issues regarding puppy mills.

Help Your Dog Lose Weight
Beginning Friday, May 8 and continuing through the month, PETCO will feature a “Buy One, Get One Free” offer on 5 lb and 17 lb bags of Dog Whisperer Weight Management Dog Food. Cesar Millan, Inc. has decided to take this opportunity to highlight the problem of canine obesity. An estimated 25 to 40% of dogs are overweight, yet many dog owners may not even be aware their dog has a weight problem. The ideal weight depends on the dog’s breed, and even within a single breed, there is variation.

So how can you tell? Place your hands on each side of your dog’s rib cage. You should be able to feel each individual rib easily. If you can see the ribs or they are protruding, he may be underweight. If you can’t feel his ribs at all, he’s probably overweight. Next, look at your dog from the side. Is his abdomen tucked up slightly? This is more prominent in some breeds than others, but he should have a waist line. Underweight dogs will have an extremely prominent tuck. Overweight dogs will have no waist, and their abdomens may drag.

Dogs who suffer from obesity develop health issues due to the added stress on their heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and joints. Also, these physical issues, combined with a lack of exercise, often result in behavioral problems. Fortunately, there are many ways that you can help your dog to get back to his or her ideal weight!

Seven Tips for Canine Weight Loss.

How to Avoid Puppy Mills
Puppy mills can be a danger for families that want to adopt a new dog. A puppy mill is a breeding facility with the sole purpose of churning out the most dogs for the least money - and to make the most profit. Substandard breeding conditions and inbreeding can lead to health and behavioral problems in the puppies bred there. Since the 1980s, the Humane Society of the United States has been fighting to shut down these facilities. You can do your part by making sure to research before you adopt and by keeping yourself informed!
