Establishing Leadership with Your New Addition

Here are some important points to remember in your role as pack leader for your new dog or puppy:

Create a schedule that includes a daily 30- to 45-minute power-walk in the morning. This is critical for your dog's health, both physical and mental.

Set aside time every day to provide mental exercise by maintaining rules, boundaries, and limitations. When these needs are met, the affection you give to your dog will be channeled as a reward.

Enlist your whole family in the process of bringing a new dog home. Discuss what their responsibilities will be before the puppy or dog arrives.

Make sure you find a breed that fits your lifestyle. For example, more active breeds, like hunting and herding dogs, require more exercise to stay physically and mentally content. But remember, breed is not destiny. Assess the individual dog's energy level before taking him or her home.

Always walk out the door ahead of your dog when leaving the house. This will show your dog who is in the leadership role.

On walks, make sure that your dog is not in front of you, pulling you down the street. Instead, keep your dog to your side or behind you. This will also demonstrate to your dog that you are the alpha figure.

Give your dog something to do before you share food, water, toys, or affection. This way the dog earns his treat. For example, have him or her perform the Sit or Down command.

Set aside a budget for unexpected circumstances, like medical bills and training classes. A healthy, well-trained dog makes a wonderful pet.

A dog will adjust best if his new family learns these lessons before he arrives. Remember, dogs don’t crave a fancy treat or bed; they need you to become their stable pack leader to demonstrate love in a way they understand.

spoiling my dogs

Hi,

Thank you for sharing this information. This is really very helpful to me since I'm taking care of three dogs right now. And been spending with them a lot of time especially when I'm home.

I love dogs so much but I have the tendency to spoil them a lot. I gave them too much comfort and convenience so, it looks like they became so demanding. I never actually realized that I should be a leader to them not just they mere owner. Because of this I may have a hard time now in training them.

Fostering a Nerve Elkhound

Hey Cesar,
I need your help badly! I am fostering a Norwegian elk hound for the time being and she is a lot of work. I walk her for long periods of time I take her to parks to socialize and I do everything you say and everything I've read I apply to her and my other dog. I establish my leadership, I master the walk and do all the right things but recently i got a Head lead leash and as I was putting it on she bared her teeth and I corrected her and still bared her teeth eventually she bite me very badly on my hand (bleed and tears) and she ran to her cage. It seem the cage is her safe spot. It empowers her nerve/aggression. I think her last owner uses it in a negative way or didn't disciple her right.

The reason I am writing this is because I think i am in over my head, not just with her but in general. I go to school for dogs, Ive read your books and studied your methods. I even work at Best Friends Pet Care here in New Jersey. But I feel like I am doing everything wrong. I feel like reading and watching your show isn't good enough. I am surrounded by very unbalanced dogs and naive humans and it frustrate me which effects my energy everyday. I need your guidances!!

My puppies potty training questions

We brought a new pom puppy home at 12 weeks, in the beginning we showed her the puppy pads and left several around the house... when she would start doing the sniffing around the carpet dance we would take her to the puppy pad and just stand there saying 'go potty'... well sometimes she would use it and sometimes she would just look at us and then walk off the pad and pee.... now she is 16 weeks and she pees everywhere and poops anywhere... I hate the crate.. I know she knows this...but I can't stand locking her up.... anything I can do besides the crate thing?...I've sent for your 'Puppy Bundle' but just thought I'd ask anyway.. the sooner she reacts to me as the leader the better for her and me.
Thanks!
