To celebrate this season of nostalgia, we sat down with Cesar to ask him about two of his most important human pack members, and how they’ve helped him to work with his pack at the Dog Psychology Center.
Q: How did your sons Andre and Calvin help when they were younger?
Actually, Calvin and Andre helped even more then than they help now! Their presence alone was teaching my pack how to be with a young human being. Up until they were 6 years old, they came with me to the Dog Psychology Center, and almost every day they went with me up into the mountains. That's all I could give them. It was the only Disney I could afford.
One of my biggest Rottweilers, Kane, would give them rides on his back. We didn't have skateboards back then, so I created a little cart for Kane to pull them. Somebody gave me a type of sled – one of those round ones, like a big plate. We would go to the beach and ask Kane to pull little Andre on the sand back and forth using the plate. So even as a baby, Andre was a pack leader for a giant Rottweiler and gave him a job to do
Of course, kids are always willing to take the leash, so Calvin and Andre helped to walk the dogs. And during mealtime, they would watch from their little chairs, learning the correct way to feed the dogs. And when they were out of their chairs, they were always looking around and touching the dogs, learning to interact and teaching the dogs, "don't be afraid of kids, and don't dominate kids." It’s important for the dogs to learn that lesson, and Calvin and Andre helped me teach it to them.
