I just read your article on adopting an older dog, and I had to reply. We adopted Luca (he was Zeus when we found him) just over a year ago from the Providence Animal Rescue League. He is a toy fox terrier, now 9 years old, and he is the light of our lives.
I can truly say that he rescued me. I was going through a tough time, having just lost a family member to a murder and a close friend to a tragic accident. I needed to do something good; something that would make me feel good and more in control. When we met Luca, he was sitting in his own cage, surrounded by big dogs and pit bulls, looking terrified. I learned that he suffered from occasional seizures, and he has had a few since he joined our home, but none too severe or too frequent.
Some people thought we were crazy for taking home an older dog with "issues", but every day re-affirms our decision. He loves me and really loves his dad. We camp, both tent and trailer, and he travels with us everywhere. He brings us such joy and every day is a blessing.
Thank you for everything you do, and I will keep doing what I can. I know that adopting our little boy is one of the best choices we ever made.
