Hello Mr. Millan,
We have four dogs, no real behavior issues other than the smallest one has become very afraid of telephones.
It started with cell phones, but now he runs outside if you so much as pick up a phone (we have a dog door and a pen), and it takes much coaxing to get him to come inside, even though our weather here has been in the 20s and he has little fur. He will lay in the snow shivering.
What can we do to get him past this? He is afraid of other things (vacuum, hairdryer, cameras, electric razor, etc.), but we can shield him from those. The phone is becoming a big problem though. I am hoping you can help, and you have some strategies we can use to desensitize him.
Thank you,
Peggy Cooper
Dear Peggy,
You need to create a good state-of-mind in your dog and then introduce the sound (or object) that makes him unstable. In order to create the right state, the dog must be engaged in a job that keeps his mind occupied.
In good weather, I would recommend a nice, long walk, but I understand that in twenty-degree weather this would be impossible! So I suggest investing in a treadmill and hiring someone who can teach you how to properly use it with your dog. Once the dog is really focused on the task at hand, make the phone ring. This helps create a relationship between that sound and the positive activity.
Remember, be calm and assertive! The dog may try to run from the situation. Do not feel sorry for him, or you will not be able to help. If you baby him, your dog will not feel secure, because you are in a weaker state than him.
Feed him only consistent calm-assertive energy!

i have 3 dogs
dear cesar
i have 3 dogs, an older dog that will be 7 he is beagle/whippet mix, the other 2 are italian greyhound mix, they will be a year old in sept. the two young ones fight for attention, one i always more jealous, the other one when i leave the room or come home she's so excited that she jumps on me or anyone else and bits whatever she gets ahold of on you, i had the backyard fenced in so they have plenty of room to run and exercise. i have to put them in their pen at night and when i leave cause they tear everything up, they always have to be irritating my older dog.
Now my older dog is scared of everything, he especially don't like the other dogs, the little ones take up so much of my time that i can't spend as much time with him as he had before we got the 2 little ones.
how do i get the little ones to stay off me and others, and being jealous of each other and my other dog, and to get my other older dog to justnot be so irritated by the little ones.
thanks

Violant with vaccum cleaners, ironing boards, lawn mower
Hello Cesar,
Our Jack Russell is almost 5 years old. She has progressively become violant with the ironing board even when just staninding. She attacks it as if it was another animal. She goes crazy with the vaccum cleaner and bites it in a crazy state. Brandy will bite the tires on the mower. We have to put her in her cafe during all these normal tasks. She bites her bed or whatever she can get a hold of, in a frenzy if she can't get to the device. We've had her since she was two months. We don't understand why she is so aggressive that way. I took her walking to South Beach and she was a bratty dog, barking at all the other dogs and it was embarrasing have some lunch at one of those outdoor restaurants.
With most guests, she'll become aggressive, especially mechanics, or any service men we have at the house.
She has been aggressive from a distance with my boss, a 60 yr. old really nice lady. We have to keep her in her cage but she will not stop barking or biting her blankets during the visit of these people. It becomes really difficult to have people over. She did bite my best friend who was visiting from Tampa. She didn't puncture her skin, but could have. She's extremely affectionate with us and really sweet with certain friends she's faimilar with.
What is wrong with her?
Thank you,
Mercy
