Child with Fear of Dogs

Hi Cesar,

My niece Rea, age 10, is very fearful of dogs. She had a small dog nip her where she was raised in the Philippines and she never got over it.

She's been here about a year and one-half with her mom. We watch your program together, we've been to the animal shelter, we've had an uneven visit with a friend's small dogs. In theory Rea says she's not afraid anymore, but when faced with the reality of even just a friendly sniffing dog, she freezes, yells and generally emits fear for a hundred yards around her.

Rea wants to improve but we don't know how to help her. Do you have any classes for humans at your center or suggestions? We'd be happy to come to your center. By the way, her mom is also a little fearful, although she does not have as obvious a reaction as Rea. Also, Rea and her mom are going back to the Philippines for a visit. Rea will be facing the same dog again and we would like her to have confidence in dealing with the situation. She's a good kid, smart, a good athlete. She's just a little freaked out in this area. Thanks in advance.

Rea, I want you to know that we are supporting your courage! I would recommend that you practice no touch, no talk, and no eye contact when meeting a dog, and to really believe that nothing bad is going to happen. Focus on that belief. Keep it in your mind at all times when you're with the dog.

Let's try this exercise: If you were not afraid, what would you like to do with a dog? If you loved a dog, how would you like to share that love with your dog? If you could take a dog for a walk, where would you take him? And if you were the best dog trainer in the world, what would you teach your dog? Focus on those positive scenarios when you're meeting the dog.

In the meantime, we're going to send you a signed photograph and a t-shirt. I want you to carry them with you every time you're about to share your courage with the canine world.

Be the pack leader, Rea! I know you can do it!

Stay calm and assertive,
Cesar Millan

Fear of Dogs is dictating my life

Hi

I am a 27 year old in the UK who is petrified of dogs. This fear only came about 3 years ago when a Black Lab (of all dogs) charged my 1 and half year old son and knocked him over and circled him aggressivly outside my front door. Since this incident i am constantly looking for dogs off leads whenever i take the children to school. I dont go for walks with my kids anymore and very fearful of going to the park so i dont go! i go everywhere in the car and have never walked 5 mins down the road to my shop.

My sister has a 5 year old dog called Harvey. I have known him since puppy but i do know his previous owner hit him when he was little so i took him from her and gave him my sister, who, has spoilt him rotten. He doesnt like men and has even tried attacking a policeman. because of this fear of him i do not go to my sisters and i would love to visit often as we both have children and thankfully he is great with the kids. no one in my family understands what i feel when i see a dog off a lead. i sweat, breath really heavy and shake from head to foot. this fear is controlling the way i go about my daily things. i feel like im having a panic attack.

please help i need this to go away!

23 and Terrified Of Dogs Big and Small

Hi Cesar

I watch your show faithfully I love the way you interact with dogs. For some reason I just am unable to wrap my head around being fearless of dogs. Unlike Rea I have never been bitten by a dog. However I am always extremely nervous around all dogs big or small.

Yesterday I went over my co-workers house she has a 1yr old pit-bull beautiful. He was in the backyard while my co-worker and I were in the front. When he saw me he ran a jumped over the fence. Well as for me I ran for my life. Good thing my SUV door was open otherwise I might have had a heart attack I was extremely terrified.

I just have no idea of how to stay calm, and or assertive especially around hyper/excited dogs. Is there anything that I can do? I thought about getting a dog of my own to help me cope with my phobia.

Sincerely,
Fearful Dog Lover

I was terrified of dogs

I know what worked for me is getting my own dogs (chihuahuas) and learning (from Ceasar) how to be their leader. I got them as puppies and have always practiced Ceasar's method. One of the things that help me gain confidence around other dogs was walking my own. Nothing calls out to dogs like other dogs. I will admit that I use to be on the constant look out for dogs that were unleashed and would come after me and my dogs as we walked around. Well more than once large dogs have come barreling out at me and little by little I have learned to not only control my dogs but the strange dog coming at me.

There was one time in particular when I was walking my dog down a country road by my inlaw's cabin. I could see the dog was off leash and wandering around a very large lot that came right up to the road I was walking on. I thought more than once that I would just turn around and not deal with it but I pushed myself and decided to go forward. It was really hard. Sure enough the strange dog caught sight of us coming up the road and began to bark and run toward the road. At this point I was across the road from the dog's yard. I mustard up more courage and continued on even though this large dog was coming up the ditch getting ready to cross the road to us. I straighten my posture, stopped and told my dogs to be still, they were also a bit nervous, I looked right at the dog, snapped my fingers and pointed back toward his house with a "shht" sound. The dog's energy turned on a dime. His tail went down an his head went down and he turned and walked back to his house. I was so impressed with myself and couldn't help but think that my dogs were impressed with me as well. My fear has not gone completely away but little by little I'm getting more and more confident. Hope that help.
