We have two dogs, and Lola, our youngest who is almost two years old, loves to eat poop. Now that she is eating poop, our other dog Bo, who is three years old, has copied her in this bad habit. Why do dogs eat poop, and how can we discourage them from eating it?
Thank you,
JoAnn Morris
Dear JoAnn,
Eating feces is normal with many different animal species. In dogs, it is not part of the digestive process, but it is a normal cleaning behavior in mother dogs with pups. Some dogs eat stool even without puppies in a misguided attempt to clean either the yard or their kennel. This can easily turn into a habit.
There are two approaches to stopping the behavior. The most common approach is to use either Adolph's meat tenderizer or a product called "For-bid". These products are supposed to give the stool a bitter flavor when eaten. In my experience, these products are only successful some of the time. Another approach that may work better is to find the stool in the yard and cover it with a hot sauce, such as Habanero sauce, that will be uncomfortable to eat but cause no real damage. After a bite or two, most dogs will decide it isn't worth it.

Eating Feces
Hi
When you commented on the problem above you only mentioned it about the dog eating out in their own back garden. I am living in Scotland and we have many areas that your dog can walk without the lead, but unfortunately people do not always clean up their dogs mess and it is there I am having more problems with my female dog.
I was thinking about getting a mussel for her because she needs the run about with my younger dog as she has been very overweight before we got her.
She will be getting spayed next week, do you think this might help her problem?
Thank you
Dog Eats Cat Feces
Do you recommend the hot sauce for dogs that are eating cat feces too? Will this deter the cats from using the litterbox?
my dog eats poop too
I'm sorry, I have one little dog,Rocky, is a German shepherd, but he has two months, and he also eats poop,i don't know what to do because he is inside the house, and I'm very frustrated because when i'm with him he doesn't eat it, but when i leave him and i come back, on the floor is only a poopstain.

coprophagia
Our 12 month old beagle eats the lot, our younger puppies stool, cat stool and her own. We keep the yard clear, and are giving the cats their own sand pit to use away from the dogs reach. We have tried almost all remedies, pineapple, zuchini and spinach in her food to no avail. We have changed her diet to a natural one (http://www.k9natural.co.nz/) to ensure she gains all the nutrients she needs. We are from New Zealand and can not buy forbid here over the counter so have purchased online and are now awaiting its arrival with fingers crossed it works as we are almost out of ideas. We can not let her run around outside like a normal dog or like our puppy. We have to supervise her all the time. it is a constant battle for leadership in our house with her, so we are just embarking on some of Cesars programs and training to aid us in this also.
Dog eats stool
I've rescued a Golden Retriever who also eats his feces. I also have a Siberian Husky, a Pekingese and a Chorkie which gives the Retriever a large variety. For the last couple of days I've been trying the Adolphs and it's worked. Unfortunately it appears that I may have been using a bit much. The dogs stools are loose and it seems they have lost the appetite for their food with that stuff on it. I thought I was using a little but must be using too much. I have the Original flavor. Can you please advise me on how much of that I should add and how often? Thank you for any help you can give me.
