Remember, barking is natural! It's an important means of communication for dogs. But sometimes problems can develop. As the pack leader, it's your job to step in and control excessive barking.
Correct and follow through! Tell your dog to stop barking using a look, a sound, or a physical correction. But don't stop there. Your dog may pause and then go right back to what he was doing. His body relaxed, but his brain was still on alert. Be patient. Wait until your dog completely submits before you go back to what you were doing.
Make sure you are calm! Constant barking can be irritating, but you won't be able to correct the problem if you are frustrated. Animals don't follow unbalanced leaders. In fact, your dog will mirror your energy. If you're frustrated, he will be, too! And barking is a great release for that frustrated energy. Take a moment to curb your own internal barking first.
Stake your claim! Is your dog barking over and over again at the same object, person, situation, or place? Then you need to step up and claim that stimulus as your own. Use your body, your mind, and your calm-assertive energy to create an invisible wall that your dog is not allowed to cross. Do it with 100% dedication and focus, and the results may surprise you.
Give your dog more challenges! Excessive barking is often the result of pent-up energy. If this is the case, the solution is simple: release that energy in more productive ways. Does your dog receive a daily walk? Can you make the walk more challenging with a bicycle, a backpack, or by walking on an incline? Can you provide more mental challenges, such as herding, agility training, or simple obedience games? There are many, many ways to increase the challenges in your dog's life. Find one that you enjoy that your dog can participate in safely.

re: Pregnant woman can't sleep
to shelbel142:
Most cities have a noise ordinance, find out what your city's says and then take action. Call the police, complain. Most times police won't say who it was that complained, just that 'the neighbors called complaining about the barking' type of thing. Or you could tell them you want to remain anonymous. That way there's no hard feelings and life is peaceful once again. :)
Hope this helps.
Barking dog, car doors close/postman's truck
I have a similar problem with my Lab/Husky mix. She's now 4 years old. When she and my Schnauzer mix hear a car door close they go crazy and bark. I guess they figure someone is coming to the house. My lab mix just has to hear the Mailman's truck and she starts barking too. I have my daughter's boyfriend living with us, they have an apartment in my basement and every time he comes upstairs to the kitchen area, she barks at him as well. I was wondering if this was a territorial bark? She's got issues too. Often she has the hair on her back stand up when she's doing this barking. My daughters and boyfriend will get frustrated and yell at her and that doesn't help, well I think she becomes afraid of the loud noises and will stop for a minute. It's driving everyone crazy.
What to do?

My Beagle barks when alone
Hi, my beagle is 11 years old and only barks when we are not home and when someone different then my family enters our house. He can be really mean and turn agressive sometimes. We went away for two days and our neighbour whatched him, but he only barked at her and tried to bite her. But when me and my family is home, he is the sweetest dog ever. The hole neighbourhood didn't sleep, because he barked ALL NIGHT... I couldn't believe this, but when we came home, he fell asleep (allmost in a coma! haha just kidding). He does get enough exercise, but he doesn't like to play (with toys or people) and he is affraid of water.
What can I do to make him stop barking when i'm at work or when we are away? Why does my dog bark and is agressive towards other people? What am i doing wrong? Please help :(

pregnant woman can't sleep!
When I get short on sleep, it's harder to cope. I have put up with my neighbors' wild dog pack for 2 years now. I have never said anything to them, but frequently have lost sleep, as the dogs would bark early in the morning.
It's now down to the wire, I am due to have my baby in 33 days, and sleep is more important than ever. Unfortunately, the neighbors have added a Pomeranian who seems to instigate all the other dogs in the yard, and the neighborhood, at all hours of the night and day. The neighbor told my mate that they were just dog-sitting for a few days, but it has been two weeks, and I am getting crankier by the day. The little one also has a high-pitched yap that makes it hard to sleep through, whereas with the others, I could usually roll over and get back to sleep.
It is also causing contention because my boyfriend doesn't want to ruffle the neighbors' feathers. I have thought of everything, from writing a nice letter trying to address the issue, to searching the web for a stop-barking device that I could mount outside. I have not ever heard them trying to quiet their dogs once, they are allowed to bark as long as they want.
It is one thing to have a cranky woman on your hands, but I warn my boyfriend that if the baby comes, and is unable to nap, then he will have two crying babies on his hands, myself included... any suggestions?
can't sleep
Hello,
I feel for you and understand a little of what you are going through! I had a barking beagle next door at a former house. I am not well, and have to nap a lot since I have extreme insomnia problems. It was awful. I had teenagers at the time and they too were frustrated, and guests too. We talked to the twp and were told that there were times when the owners were not allowed to leave a dog out barking. I think this owner knew exactly what time in the AM she was allowed to put the dog outside and what time she had to bring him in. There are also time limits I believe. If I wanted to get help from the twp, I was to keep track of when this dog was outside, for how long, etc. But, that's when I figured out the neighbor knew the limits and kept to them!
I now live in a neighborhood with several barking dogs and have at this moment, three dogs in my house because of fostering and boarding. I sleep with an inexpensive air filter blowing in my bedroom all the time. I can sleep through almost anything going on outside. So do my dogs!! This is would suggest you at least give a try. Only risk is getting addicted to the white sound for sleeping.
As for the baby? They usually will sleep through anything if allowed to have noise around them from the beginning. I used to be able to vacuum the nursery while my firstborn slept through it. The best thing for the baby is just to let her/him learn to sleep with the noise going on.
Find out what the rules for dogs in your twp are, you may be able to find that out online. THen, collect the data of the times the dogs are out, also the length of time they are allowed to bark, and then, with these things, go to your twp. and ask them to deal with the neighbors. They don't need to know it's you complaining.
I was about to buy my neighbor a bark stopping collar for their dog! And she gave him away. It's the most awful thing to live with so arm yourself with data and go to the twp.
Pregnant woman can't sleep
it must be very frustrating for you dealing with this matter however given that the neighbours do not correct the dogs may mean that it doesn't bother them and therefore will not occur to them that it could cause anyone else any distress. If this is the case you will have to raise the issue with them, in a calm and friendly way off course, to establish whether they are willing to assist in the reduction of incessant barking. It sounds like the dogs may need more exercise and if that is the case and they are not willing to do anything about that maybe you could suggest a dog walker or offer for your boyfriend( if he is willing) to walk the dogs for them.....first things first though you need to find out what you are dealing with and go from there.
hours of barking....
Help please... I have 2 problems... barking and territorial
Barking:
We have a 6 year old female husky 'intact' and certainly the leader of the pack, 2 year old male, fixed, together fine and very relaxed dogs.... I fell in love with a shepard/husky cross from a rescue centre, he had been found on a reserve in a pretty bad way.. when I adopted him he was 3 months old. However, he has taken to barking at every noise possible, and now my 2 year male husky is also barking along with him...
Territorial:
We have one large dog area, which the 2 huskys tend to spend their time, and the pup was in a separate area next to them... (only as when we got him he was still pretty sick) now when I put them all together they bark and growl at each other, especially the 6 year female husky.. normally very calm and accepting, she now is becoming aggressive and moody when they are all together....
The are taken out for many walks throughout the day and 2 long bike rides, one before bed time. They eat on time morning and evening and now I am at a loss of how to have them all getting along.. maybe this will help with the pups barking issues too...
hope you can help!

Barking Schnauzer
HI,
I have a 3yr old Schnauzer named Chloe, she was the last puppy from a litter to be sold and I have a feeling that they never socialized her at all and kept her locked in a room(she was almost a year when we got her). When we first got her she wouldn't come and barked and barked. I took her in my arms and basically made her like me, I sat for 3 hrs on the floor with her and kept talking and petting her and she got over it. She loved my husband as well. The problem is that since we have gotten Chloe we cannot have company, she barks and barks and runs in her cage and continues to bark from there. We have tried putting her in her bed in our bedroom so she is not so stressed out but no use, it goes from barking to howling. This has become an issue with my husband and myself. He wants to get rid of her and I cannot see sending her to a new home and they will send her away and so on and so forth. I have gotten pills from the vet and they don't work either. My heart breaks to think of what kind of life she will have somewhere else. Other than that she is such a good girl, but the barking is driving everyone crazy and stressing me out, I cannot afford the stress since my stroke so I am asking if anyone has any ideas. I saw the one for the dog silencer, does it work..? I know the dog collar one doesn't..wasted money that was, water bottle, saying no, pennies in a can, meds. I fear Chloe might be headed for doggie heaven if I can't find a way to help her, no one wants a yappie dog. I do have another dog that is no way at all like Chloe and I have had other Schnauzers (3)and never had this problem before.
Thanks in advance.
Barking
Tee Hee...I have an Australian Dingo and she can't bark at all, but she gets up a mighty howl when my kids play their bagpipes, but the wild/feral dogs in the area (farming area) also start howling to them as well :-)
If only we could teach her to howl in time and in tune ;-)
my CRAZY beagle
OK my dog barks at smoke that's not communication.so what is it?
dog barks at smoke
Beagles are smelling machines. The sight of smoke means the scent is available. The scent itself may be alarming to the dog or simply unpleasant. Many dogs dislike the smell of smoke.
There may be an association of something frightening happening when someone was smoking a cigar or cigarette. In addition to communication, many behaviorists say that barking indicates anxiety. The dog may be barking an alarm or anticipating trouble because the smoker was smoking when the bad thing happened.
What matters is that you counter-condition the dog to the smoke if indeed you live with a smoker and this is a problem in your home rather just an occasional outburst.
What you would do is NOT respond to the barking but calmly redirect the dog as though the smoke were of no importance. Play, feed, do something active. Maybe have the smoke predict something good such as a special toy appearing when the smoker lights up.
Hope this helps.
Excessive Barking and Fear
We have a 6.5 month German Sheperd. She is a great dog - however she has two major issues. Barking for nothing and barking out of fear.
*She barks at anything and nothing. It doesnt matter how tired she is (after walks) or whether we are home or not - she just barks for the hell of it.
*She is also highly afraid of thunder and firecrackers and will go absolutely nuts when she hears them. Last storm she barked for 4 hours straight. And ran around going crazy. In her kennel, she tried to break out of it.
We have tried every single suggestion that can be found online. The Vet put her on anti anxiety meds - they didnt work. Nothing is working. Nothing.
We are going to have to give her up if we dont get help because the neighbors (and frankly us too) are sick of the constant barking. It is destroying my marriage because her barking is such a nuisance and we cant find a solution.
I am desparate. Again, nothing ever suggested works. We have literally tried everything. Is there any hope????
Help!!
deep breath method
Reading your post my heart went out to you. I have some thoughts for you.
Instead of thinking about solutions to barking, think of ways to keep her calm in the first place.
For a working type dog probably more mental & physical stimulation is required. Mental exhaustion will make correcting a barking habit simple. Im sure there are many sites with activities for german shepherds.
Other ideas you could try, more & more exercise and keeping the "den" environment calming & quiet as possible, humans included.
If she does "run around going crazy" I would suggest stopping this type of behavior asap. You can try putting a leash on her and have her lie down. dont caudal the anxiety/craziness - quietly wait for her to realize nothing bad is going to happen. No matter how long she takes to fully relax you must stay with it, this is the most important thing. Don't become part of her anxiety by loosing patients or feeling bad - you will become the emotional life raft she needs by staying calm & assertive ;)
Good luck!
Barking German Shepherd...
Look what I found today. I was researching online for a Friend who's being taken to court by her neighbor for her dog barking too much. I think you will find this VERY interesting. I ALSO have a "chatter mouth GSD"... My Vet said it is a breed specific trait. And would only get worse as the dog aged.
Please look at this and see if it might be an option for you.

fear of loud noises
This may take awhile but worth the try. When you are home and there are loud noises, crack of thunder, etc. Do not pet or coddle your dog. everytime give your dog a treat and act like it is no big deal. Make sure that you are not afraid and that you show that it is nothing. You are showing the dog that the noise is a good thing by giving the treat. If you pet or coddle the dog you will be reinforcing the behaviors.
Excessive Barking and Fear
I have a similar problem with my 7yr old rescue dog that we have had 3mths. I know she has had at least 2 other homes that gave her up due to the anti-social barking.
Today I am trying noise desensitising. I downloaded an app in iphones that is giving all the sounds you would get on a CD. I am hoping that if she hears the noises over and over and gets no reaction from any of us, she will realise their is nothing to fear.
I hope you dont give up hope but I understand how it effects relationships.
Luna´s barking
Hi, My doggy´s name is Luna, she is a chihuahua-dashund. She is very quite and well behaved overall. She rarely barks, but when she does she barks very loudly to people that pass by the door or any noise she hears outside the apartment. I know it is normal that dogs bark and sometimes I feel bad asking her to shut up If she only barks on this instances. Should I make her stop barking? or should I let her defend her territory against strangers?
Thanks.
Chiweenies
Hello! We have an adopted three legged chiweenie that is absolutly the prince of our home. I have noticed that he will bark almost to greet new people or animals, but quickly stops and adjusts to the new stimulus with a wag of the tail. Is yours afraid of thunder and lighting? Mo will run underneath the couch and howl the entire time.. We have tried all to get him over this but its just what he does. He is the dominant of our pack and its interesting that he is the only one that displays this behavior.
Good luck and enjoy your chiweenie! They are amazing and so cool to have :-)
My neighbour's dog
It's my neighbour's dog that barks incessantly in my case. I don't know what to do. I hate to call the city (I'm not sure if they even have a by-law that deals with this). I really like dogs and theirs is a rather cute dog but it barks and wakes up my elderly mother when she lays down for an afternoon nap. I don't know what I can do apart from going over there and offering to take it for a walk. I think my neighbour is in over her head since she is a single mom with a handicapped boy.
our mini daschie barks like a maniac...
he is exactly like buster from a previous comment, except his name is baxter...at 5 months, he is very timid and goes crazy when anyone comes to the door or if he hears anyone walking past...
while at the dog park, if someone comes into the park after we are arrive, he will go up to them (the owners not the dogs) and bark like crazy...
i think he is over compensating as he is quite timid and scared of people, but i am at a loss as to how i can help him relax with people and stop the crazy barking...
my doxie is quite a barker as
my doxie is quite a barker as well. if i correct him, he'll stop for about 2 seconds then returns to barking until he is satisfied that the threat is neutralized. i've tried stopping him with sounds, touch correction and distractions. he still remembers he would like to be barking after my correction!
My doxie is a barker too....
My Cherokee is 5 yrs old any stranger she sees when we are on a walk she barks at and when she is at home looking out the window.. and I have done everything cesar has says to do. and she stops and relaxes and then once I leave the room to do something she starts up again and its even worse when I am sick its like she is even worse... Then there are those times when I follow cesars rules of discipline and she barks back when I tell her no and looks right at me and I don't look her in the eye, but look over her head and then when any guy buy my stepdad comes into the room she barks and goes into a frenzy... And when I walk her and the other dogs I walk for other people she barks at them until she is the lead dog.. I think it has more to do on who she thinks is alpha and I haven't always been a strong alpha, but I am the only one that get her to walk and she will not leave me willing.. so I am guessing she also has separation anxiety... she can be frustrating at times but I do love her like my own kid.. Ok so I tend to ramble sorry...
My doxie as well
my dog does the same thing as well. We have been hopeing that her behaivior will stop soon cause she will be entering her senior years soon. It has not changed at all. Whenever something moves outside she starts barking like crazy. when we leave the house she acts like its the last time she'll ever see us. My mom and my sister yell at her to be queit which ofcourse makes it worse. And when we come back she greets us like we haven't met for years. I stay home a lot when my mom is out and when I am petting her and making a fuss out of her she is quiet but when I stop she starts again. Do you think I should ignore her? Or does she have separation anxiety? I guess most doxies are very vocal.
By the way, what is that wierd high-pitched sound that dogs make. candy does that so much that even when she's not barking my mom puts a bark collar on her.

Barks at thing on whole block.
We have 2 Puggles. Rescued as puppies 4 years ago. Happy and Healthy Brother & sister "Duke & Daisy". We love them to so much. But we are tired when they bark at everything thats going on the whole block. They are loud and sound like they are in agony or furious. After 4 years of trying everything we thought of, we get still nothing. I have tried the 'looking'. Duke looks at me and hushes, but Daisy stairs at me and just keeps barking, as if to say; "but their is something down the street"; "but their is something down the street" - Over and over again. Sounding almost defiant. Duke looks at her and she hushes, but not always. Duke looks at us and obeys. How can we get her to obey? We want them to confine their barking to only thing on our property. Not on the 'Walk route'. How do we stop both of them from Barking at everything on the block?
Please help us be good neighbor.

Abandonment Issues
My roommates and I wanted a "house dog" and it seemed the perfect situation when my sister offered hers: "Honey-Bear," a 10 year old beagle basset hound mix, who was adopted from a shelter. She's the sweetest dog. That said, she was neglected by her former owners, before my sister adopted her. Whenever my sister leaves the house, she begins to wine and howl. When I baby-sit this dog at my place, she administers the same behavior towards me. Although I live in a house with six other people to love her, I myself am on campus eight hours a day, and can't expect my roommates to put up with this while I'm gone. But if it wasn't for this one problem we could keep her. Any help or suggestions?
Barking at people and other dogs...
We have a chihuahua dotson mix. She is fine at home but on a walk she'll bark at everybody. We took her to a dog training class but all she wants to do is bark at all the other dogs. When i tired to pull her back from barking she tried to bit me. I gave her plenty of exercise before the class but the exact same thing happened even with all the exercise. She was the only one in the class of about 10 that kept barking. Eventually we have to stop going. The trainer said we need to get a muzzle for her. She's about 6-7 months old.
any ideas would be great.
Thanks
Thomas
barking dog
I have a std poodle cross with a wheaten terrier. He is 4.5 years old and very loveable and respects my boundaries. Since I have been following your show and purchased DVDs he has improved 110%. I have mastered the walk, have feeding rituals etc. My only problem is with barking and occasionally meeting other dogs he is unfamiliar with but I have a good handle on that. He will bark at someone walking by but will stop and stay stopped when I tell him to. The problem is when one of the kids comes home or my partner, doesn't matter if he knows who it is or not he barks until they get in the house. My previous dog was never like this as soon as he knew it was a family memeber he stopped barking. It is really annoying when you are sleeping and get awakened by a barking dog! We have come a long way and I think this is the last piece of the puzzle. I am walking him more but that only seems to help so much. He gets two walks a day 20-30 min in the morning and 45min at night. I know it is most likely something I am doing so any suggestions would be appreciated.
barking
our old girl did the same, bark all the time and we couldn't figure out why.anyway we figured she had to be in pain so took her to the vet.we knew she was riddled with arthritis and put it down to that alas it wasn't just that, her nerves had gone in her back and her back legs were going.we had no choice we had to let her go we couldn't let her suffer anymore.so take your dog to be checked they maybe in terrible pain.
2 Labs that bark when they hear car doors
I have two beautiful 15 month old labs that are great dogs. When they are inside my house and hear a car door slam outside the house, they go absolutely bonkers. They bark constantly even when I try to redirect them. They can tolerate any other outside noise but bark whenever they hear a car door slam. I would love to figure out a way to break this habit.
Barking Pug
My 2 yr old pug has a problem with barking when I let him outside. I have tried increasing his exercise and correct him when we are with him. The problem is he likes to bark when we let him out by himself. If we even sit on the porch he won’t bark. It’s like he knows we aren’t around so he can get away with it. Any thoughts. I have one neighbor who has complained. When the weathers nice we don’t mind going out with him but when its freezing out I would like to be able to let him out without disturbing the neighbors. Does anybody have any thoughts?
the walk
never let ur dog out with out a leash. i have a 6yo german shepard and a 14yo pug. when i let them out with out a leash they decided they owned the property and became territorial. now i walk them every morning and night and they do not bark or disrupt the neighborhood. I learned my lesson the hard way--please don't take this email lightly it's much harder to fix a dog than to walk him and prevent unwanted bad behavior.
Barking Maltese
Hello All,
I have some of the same problems with my 2 year old Maltese. She is so sweet and a perfect little girl in the house. Except, when she sees a dog on the TV, she runs up and barks at them and lately it has gotten to the point she now starts to growl and bark at ANY animal on the TV. But, the real problem is when she goes for her potty walk. As soon as she gets out the door she does a bark as if to say, I am out here world. Then, if she sees any other dog being walked or even people w/ no dogs, she barks at them. She will bark and then look right at me, I give her this bad look and hold up my finger. She quiets, but then looks at the direction of the object again and barks. I have said, "No Bark" and she stops, but looks away and still barks. I bought the electric shock collar and now, it doesnt even phase her anymore. She is so defiant. Help!!
barking maltese
we have a two year old mini schnauzer with the barking at the t.v. problem. the only solution i have to offer you is a squirt bottle. i bought a small squirt bottle (travel size $1.00). i keep it filled with water and set near the coffee table or end table. our dog barked at every animal on t.v. (even cartoons) so we can't watch anything we'd like to see with an animal. i just "shoot" him with the water when he charges the t.v or barks. this may only work for us because he doesn't like water, bath or river or pool. i've also used it outside in the yard. i don't mind him barking at passerbys or people coming up to the house, but if it lasts too long we just "shoot" him and he stops. now it's to the point, we just grab the bottle and he stops. so we leave it out near the t.v. and lately he hasn't even made a move toward the t.v. (maybe a light growl from the couch is all we hear now) i hope this can help your situation...i completely understand what your going through.
Window Watcher
My little shih tzu has just turned 1, his name is Ace. I have just purchased our first home. After getting used to his new place, i've noticed that he's developed new habbits. Our backyard is pretty big with a front of trees, and now finds it neccessary to keep a watch out threw the front windows and back sliding patio door for the squirrels all day long till it gets too dark for him to see.
It starts out cute, laying there at 6am watching the sunrise, then it turns to a whine until they get closer then it turns to jumping and full out barking. i bet he would rip one apart if he got ahold of it, even though they are the same size. sometimes he stops when i say hush, but he only stops for a good few minutes then he's back at it again. same with anyother command. During days i'm sick home from work i tape up cardboard over the windows so i can sleep during the day. I'm running out of options, and have considered tinting the windows so he cant see out.
HELP
Barking
I have a minni dachshund that has a barking problem, I know its in their breed to be barkers, but she is starting to get aggresive. especially while on the leash. She barks when people walk by our house, when they knock on the door and even when they step in the house. I started using the can with change in it, and its helped with the barking inside, but the barking outside is worse!!! She barks at dogs when we are on walks, and sometimes she'll jump after them...its gotten to the point where I can't even control her to stop. She does it at the dog parks too...there she is not aggresive, but she'll get fixated on one dog and bark after it the whole time...when that dog leaves, she'll go after another one. The thing that scares me is that she'll also get in the middle of bigger dog fights and just bark at them while they're fighting...someone help me!!!
Incessant Barking when "owner" leaves
Hello. I hope that someone can give me some advice on what to do. About a year ago, I offered a friend of the family (Bob) the option of staying in a spare bedroom when he landed a new job in the area. It was supposed to be a short term solution until he could get settled. Shortly after moving in, he asked if he could get a dog -- I already have a male mini dachshund (Riley) and a cat. I told him that as long as he got a female dog and Riley met her first and they got along, it would be okay.
Well, found a rescued male Pomeranian (Ursoc) right away and decided to adopt him before consulting with me. In general, Ursoc is a sweet dog -- as long as he is the center of attention. I work from home and am at my computer the majority of the day so I don't have a lot of time to train or work with Ursoc.
At first, Ursoc would lay down next to my legs just like Riley. However, as time went by, Ursoc began to get more comfortable in the house and started roaming around more and marking or pooping in the house. I tried confining him to just the room I was in, but he continued getting into trouble -- chewing up items, marking, constantly wanting to go outside.
I finally told Bob that in the morning, when he left he would need to pen up Ursoc in the kitchen (put a barrier up that would keep him in the kitchen area) where he would have access to the doggie door and water. Then the incessant barking started (it will go on constantly for hours), but only when Bob was not physically around. If I put Riley downstairs in the fenced area with Ursoc, then the barking stops. I feel that it's not fair to make Riley stay downstairs with Ursoc just to shut him up. I've asked Bob to figure out what to do, but his comment is that Ursoc doesn't bark when he's around so how is he supposed to do anything.
I've tried to be calm assertive, but I must fail at it. Any suggestions, besides the obvious one of having Bob and Ursoc move out?
Barking Dog when owner leaves

Excessive Barking
Dear Cesar,
I am at the end of my rope and having a problem keeping my emotions in check when it comes to our dogs excessive barking. We have 2 female puggles, Baily is our oldest at 3 and Jada is 1. Bialy has always been a barker, however it became a real problem when we got Jada. Taking the dogs on a walk in our nieghborhood is quite embarrassing. Baily will bark excessively, pull, and leap at other dogs. When inside our home the barking becomes insanely worse. Baily barks literally at everything. She charges the window whenever the nieghbors pull in and out of thier driveways or are just in thier yards, she barks at cars comming down the street. She will even bark at common noises in the house such as; a closet door opening or the furnace kicking on. The worst is when she will randomly charge and bark at absolutely nothing. Cesar I run an in-home daycare and have parents and children comming in thruoghout the morning and afternoon Baily is relentless in her barking during this time I do not want to loose client because she bombards them with her excessive barking and jumping up on them. Jada our youngest puggle is also learning this behavior.I have tried remote collars and devices that sound when they bark with no prevail. I have tried to claim the window, door, and people. I'm doing something wrong. Can you help?
Gracy
I have a one year old Yorkie/ShiTzu and she barks at the TV. She barks when other dogs are on the TV as well as anything that has 4 legs. It could be a real animal or a cartoon. It could be a person doing a push up. I can't get her to stop from barking at the TV. It has even gone as far as her remembering the music on certain commercials (especially the Telus commercials with the jumping goats or the rhinno) with animals in it and she will come tearing around the corner to stand in front of the TV jsut to bark at it. I don't know what to do with her and her issues with the TV.
Barking Pug
My pug does the exact same thing! Any commercial with crickets chirping or whistling and he runs to the tv to look for an animal and bark. Sometimes it's funny. But when I need him to behave, the only thing that works is the water bottle. He hates to get squirt or wet in any way. He always behaves when it's in my hand (so far).
Waldo the Westie hates TV
We have a similar problem with our Westie(Waldo) who just turned one in Feb. He used to just hate certain commercials or shows with alot of running, screaming or too much action. Now he just plain is upset if any of our TV's are on. He whines, barks, paces and jumps at the TV, but when it is off then he is totally calm. You have to be careful when you go near him to stop, because he will bite at you.
Have you resolved your issue with Gracy?
Barking while on walks
Hi
Can you please help me i have rescured 2 calvarliers 1 bitch 6 months and 1 dog 11months the problem is when we take them out for walks the dog will bark at other dogs and even horses I have tried to take him near the dogs and he then wants to play but if the dog is the other side of road he batks as if he is being hurt. I need your help
Embarrassing!!
Our 1 year old puggle, Vinny not only barks at other things/people/dogs from in the house or in the fenced in yard, he comes undone! It's more than a bark or a howl, he sounds like he's in agony; like we're tearing him limb from limb. Truth be told, he's very timid and actually skidish. This behavior is completely embarrassing. I do try to stop it by getting him away from the door or window and directing his attention towards me, and that works sometimes. But from the outside, it sounds like we're completely torchuring him. We don't want people to be affraid of him or us or our house. (if you heard him, you would be afraid of something!) I've been redirecting his attention for months now and I really so no change. Cesar, I KNOW you know the solution! :) Thanks!
Mini Pin

We are getting a puggle in a couple days and want to train him the correct way but I dont want are mini pins behaviors to rub off on him. Any recommendations on the mini pin and training are new puppy?
old dog barking incessantly
Hi Cesar,
My kids and I are huge fans of your show. I was writing because we have an old, really old dog. He's 16 years old, a german shepard/norwegian elkhound mix, we think, which we got at the pound when he was 4 months old. He's been a wonderful member of our family, loving, gentle, and noble. He started having trouble with his arthritis a couple of years ago, but it's gotten much worse in the last 3 months or so. Right now, he cannot get up without our help, and most days, can't move around without a little support from a hand on his hip. He's a little incontinent as well, so we've put diapers on him. We still take him out, but he hasn't been able to physically go on a walk (except around the backyard with our help) for a few weeks now. We can't afford a wheelchair for him, or we would have gotten one for him by now. At home, he'll often go on a barking binge, not at anything, he won't want water or food, or even help up or a change, he just barks and barks, often all night long. I've tried keeping him up all day, making sure he didn't nap at all, thinking maybe he was just off schedule. But he continued to bark all night. And now he often barks all day too. I don't know how he can't sleep at all.
He's never had a barking problem before. And am at a loss of what to do. SOmetimes some acupressue and massage helps, but not often.
Free "Freedom Wheels" (wheelchair) for Disabled Dog
You mentioned that you would like to get a wheelchair for your dog. May I recommend Maranatha Farms. Try and contact them through their website: http://www.maranathafarm.org/contact.php
Here is some information about them. Maranatha Farms make "Freedom Wheels" custom-fitted wheelchairs for handicapped animals and give them away absolutely free of charge to pet owners who need them and cannot afford to buy one. Good Luck! doteezdrstep

Having owned many dogs in my life I think Cesar would agree that your dog is trying to tell you something that most pet owners in general don't want to hear. Shepherds and Nowegian elks are very energenic breeds. That being said, your dog has no way of getting rid of his pent up energy therefore is not a happy dog. Yes he knows you love him and are doing everything in your power to make him comfortable but the fact of the matter is he is in pain. It's never easy to say goodbye to something you have loved for so many years but he is trying to tell you that he is ready to be able to run with the pack once again. I wish you well.

old dog barking incessantly
As Cesar so often says, dogs bark to communicate with other dogs (and with humans) about all sorts of issues. I am not a veterinarian, but from the information in your message post, I believe your senior dog is most likely expressing distress about his physical and emotional condition, and I strongly recommend that you take him to your vet for a physical exam and consultation. Best wishes!!
