Having A Rocky Moment

Philadelphia is called the City of Brotherly Love — which is literally what the name means — and that love came through for Andre and I when we came to town. Not only did we get to see the birthplace of the United States, we got to visit the country’s first animal shelter ever, indulge in all the great food including, of course, (real) Philly cheesesteak, and Andre and I raced up the famous “Rocky” steps — although we don’t quite agree on who won! But the real impact of the city’s love came in the form of a group

Making Change

When you have to correct a dog’s behavior, you can’t really teach them by just yelling at them, “Wrong, wrong, wrong!” This will tell them that they’ve done something you don’t like, but do absolutely nothing to guide them toward the proper behavior. People are the same way. You can tell them they’re wrong all day long, but that won’t change their behavior. You have to show them the alternative. It’s about using empathy to bring about education. In our second “Dog Nation” visit to Los Angeles, Andre and I got to see that in action firsthand as the differing

Gateway To Understanding

It’s a city in the middle of America named for a crusading king, born out of a settlement that predates the U.S. itself, and which bounced back and forth between France and Spain for a long time until, just under two hundred years ago, Missouri became a state and St. Louis became the Gateway to the West. Visting St. Louis Andre and I traveled east to visit this city for “Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation,” and the place was a revelation to both of us. Andre told me, “St. Louis is an amazing city because not only was it my first

Inspired By Love

For last Friday’s episode of “Dog Nation,” Andre and I went to San Francisco, which is an amazing place. It’s a bustling city that also feels like a small town, every corner is bursting with history, and, being surrounded by water on three sides, it still feels very connected to nature. Of course, what really gives a city its flavor is the people in it, and San Franciscans are a unique breed. They are creative and resourceful, and they never give up. While the City by the Bay has a reputation for being cold and foggy, its people could not

A Tale From Two Cities

On the most recent episode of my new show “Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation,” my son Andre and I went down to San Diego and, while we were there, dropped in to help a rescue organization and shelter in Tijuana, Mexico. The two cities are so close that they pretty much touch each other.   But they are also very far apart because they’re in two different countries, which did make it a little bit more complicated to film a TV show. Personally, I would love a world without borders of any kind between us — physical, intellectual, or spiritual. But,

We Might Be Giants

Forty years ago today, the Space Shuttle Enterprise made its first flight, which was also the first flight of any Space Shuttle. There was no dramatic launch with smoke and flames and cheers from the crowd. Instead, it took off on the back of a special 747 from Edwards Air Force Base in California, and landed the same way. It would be six months before the Enterprise detached from the airplane and landed on its own, but this shuttle itself would never make it into space. That doesn’t mean that it was a failure, though — and it’s also a

Going In Without A Bite: How To Enter A Dog’s Territory

A lot of our visitors have asked for advice to help letter carriers, meter readers, gardeners and other workers avoid being bitten when they have to go into a yard with a dog in it. It’s a valid concern. Just among postal workers in 2014, there were nearly 6,000 bites or attacks in the U.S. alone. However, this advice isn’t meant just for people who have to enter strange yards in their line of work. These tips will help anyone who wants to enter a dog’s territory without being bitten. First, make sure to apply Cesar’s golden rule of approaching

How to find the right dog walker

By Josh Weiss-Roessler Your dog needs daily exercise in order to stay both physically and mentally healthy, and if your schedule doesn’t allow you to regularly hit the trail with your four-legged companion, you may need to hire a dog walker. However, this isn’t a decision to make lightly: who you choose to walk your dog matters.
